Doubts

Description

This is my 'reading' for Oliver Guy Watkins' ongoing art project "Postcard To Brooke", the idea of which is that people unfamiliar with the poem 'Doubts' by Rupert Brooke read the poem directly to camera for the first time. Since I'd watched a fair number of readings, and was therefore pretty au fait with the poem, I thought I'd interpret it differently.

The lady in the middle is an actress named Ka Cox, for whom the poem was originally written for, and about. The words are all from the poem, except for one particualr exception, and certain phrases are repeated for resonance.

As usual, there's a bigger version if you download.

The original poem is below:

Doubts

When she sleeps, her soul, I know,
Goes a wanderer on the air,
Wings where I may never go,
Leaves her lying, still and fair,
Waiting, empty, laid aside,
Like a dress upon a chair. . . .
This I know, and yet I know
Doubts that will not be denied.

For if the soul be not in place,
What has laid trouble in her face?
And, sits there nothing ware and wise
Behind the curtains of her eyes,
What is it, in the self's eclipse,
Shadows, soft and passingly,
About the corners of her lips,
The smile that is essential she?

And if the spirit be not there,
Why is fragrance in the hair?

well man, this is really a masterpiece.
from a merely visual point of view, it captures the eye because of its complexity and amount of detail. i think i could look at it for hours, and still something would escape to view. And, despite the number of small particulars, this image doesn't look messy. it has a sort of symmetry, in its shape and in the bending of the writings, that helps the eye in the complex task of traveling through it.
the poem is deeply meaningful "per se", but the way the verses are scrambled in the images, adds something to it, since this reveals that most of them have an inner meaning which makes them autonomous and singularly inspiring. this makes me think to dadaism, even if i'm aware that it is more extreme in its way of dealing with texts.
zooming out back to the visual aspect, we can see here a medallion, a cameo holding the portrait. this adds imho a third element of value to your creation.
definitely one of your best pieces so far.
